Peak vs Continuous Discharge Current for AGV Batteries
A peak-current figure is incomplete without duration and repetition. Review the complete load profile, BMS protection, cells, cables and connectors before choosing an AGV battery.
Published 2026-10-26Voltage and amp-hours are not enough to select an AGV battery. The pack must supply the machine's sustained demand and its short load events within verified electrical and thermal limits. A peak-current number without duration and repetition cannot establish suitability.
Before approving a configuration, confirm continuous current, peak current, peak duration, regenerative current and charging strategy. Treat missing limits as project-specific rather than borrowing figures from another model.
Continuous current describes sustained operation
Continuous discharge current is the current a battery is rated to deliver under specified conditions. The rating must be read with the applicable temperature, cooling, installation and voltage limits. It is not an unconditional value for every enclosure or operating environment.
Obtain battery-side demand for travel, auxiliary equipment and any mechanisms that can run together. An average across a complete shift can hide a sustained high-load segment; identify both the steady operating states and their duration.
Peak current needs a time definition
Motor startup, acceleration and lifting can create brief high-demand events. Their size and duration depend on the drive control and mechanical task. A short pulse and an extended loaded climb should not be treated as the same battery requirement.
| Parameter | Information needed |
|---|---|
| Continuous current | Sustained battery-side current and operating conditions |
| Peak current | Maximum discharge current during each identified event |
| Peak duration | How long the event remains above the continuous level |
| Repetition | How often the event occurs and the recovery interval |
| Combined demand | Whether travel, lift and auxiliary loads overlap |
A pulse rating approved for one duration must not be extended to another duration without review. Repeated peaks also need assessment; completing one pulse does not demonstrate that the same event can repeat indefinitely.
BMS trip thresholds are not normal operating ratings
Separate the approved operating envelope from the overcurrent protection threshold and its delay. A BMS trip threshold describes protective behavior, not the current the equipment should routinely draw. Raising a protection setting does not increase the capability of the cells, conductors or switching devices.
Ask how the BMS responds when a current or cell-voltage limit is reached, what the equipment sees and how recovery occurs. Coordinate controller demand with the battery limits rather than accepting repeated protective shutdowns as normal operation.
Check the whole current path
Cell capability is one part of the assessment. Review the BMS power stage, internal connections, fuse, cable, terminal and connector as a system. Installation conditions and repeated operation affect temperature at these components.
- Confirm connector contact ratings and the actual cable arrangement.
- Provide cable length, conductor size and routing constraints.
- Check terminal and enclosure clearances with the installation drawing.
- Include relevant ambient conditions and the expected work/rest sequence.
A connector that physically mates is not proof of electrical compatibility. Do not approve a battery only because its connector resembles the existing unit.
Voltage sag can matter before a current trip
Battery terminal voltage can fall under load because of internal and connection resistance. Review the minimum loaded voltage accepted by the equipment, particularly during peaks and near the lower end of the intended SOC window.
For an initial estimate, DC input current is approximately input power divided by battery voltage. Use battery-side electrical power; mechanical motor output alone omits conversion losses and auxiliary demand. Measured traces are preferable for startup, acceleration and combined loads. This estimate does not establish a battery's approved rating.
Remember regenerative current and charging
Current returning from a motor/controller is a charge condition and needs a separate limit review. A high discharge rating does not confirm regeneration support. Likewise, the charger and opportunity-charging schedule must match the selected cells, BMS and thermal conditions.
Common purchasing questions
How much peak current does an AGV battery need?
There is no universal value. Use the actual equipment demand, peak duration and repetition, then confirm an approved battery envelope under the intended conditions.
Can a larger Ah battery automatically solve a current problem?
No. Greater nominal capacity does not establish the BMS, connector, cable or cell-current capability of a particular pack.
What should accompany a request for quotation?
Send the system voltage range, continuous and peak current trace, peak duration, regenerative-current requirements, charging strategy, available space, weight limit, connector drawing, communication requirements and estimated quantity.
Use product and case information appropriately
Review Robotics, AGV & AMR battery engineering and the 25.6V 30Ah custom robot battery pack. Confirm the required current envelope for the proposed configuration rather than inferring it from the voltage and capacity.
The Singapore robotics and heavy-duty AGV case shows different custom configurations for different requirements. Its published specifications apply to those builds and do not establish compatibility or operating results for another machine.
